What Saturn governs
Saturn describes what you have to earn rather than receive. The area of life where nothing arrives early, where competence is built slowly and, once built, tends to stay built.
It also describes limitation, duty and the structures you accept. Those are not separate meanings: a limit is what makes something a structure, and Saturn is the planet of both.
Two and a half years to a sign
Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to orbit, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. Your Saturn sign is shared with everyone born in that window, which is a narrow generation rather than a personal marker.
The house is the personal part, and with Saturn the difference is stark. Saturn in Capricorn in the fourth house and Saturn in Capricorn in the tenth describe two people who worked hard at completely different things.
Dignity
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, is exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, and in fall in Aries.
The two rulerships describe different disciplines. Capricorn's Saturn builds structures; Aquarius's Saturn maintains principles. Both are Saturn doing what it does, which is holding a line over time.
In Aries, its fall, Saturn restrains the sign that starts things, and the usual result is someone whose initiative was checked early and who has to work at self-assertion. In Cancer and Leo it operates in signs concerned with warmth and recognition, which it is not naturally good at supplying.
The Saturn return
The most cited event in modern astrology, and the one thing about Saturn most people arrive already knowing. It happens around twenty-nine, fifty-nine and eighty-eight, when Saturn comes back to the degree it held at birth.
Because Saturn frequently crosses that degree three times rather than once, the return is a passage of nine to fourteen months rather than a date. The Saturn return calculator lists every pass.
What the return is about is decided by the house natal Saturn occupies. That is the connection between this page and that one, and it is the reason a birth time matters for both.
Retrograde Saturn
Saturn is retrograde for about four and a half months a year, so roughly a third of people have it. Like Jupiter, that frequency limits how much it can mean.
The reading offered most often is that the sense of duty is internally generated rather than externally imposed: the person holds themselves to a standard nobody set for them. That is a recognisable type and a modest claim.
Reading it against Jupiter
The two are traditionally read as a pair, and the pairing is more useful than either alone. Jupiter describes where things expand; Saturn describes where they contract. A chart with both in the same house has an area of life that alternately opens and closes, which is a distinctive and frequently exhausting signature.
| Configuration | What it tends to describe |
|---|---|
| Jupiter and Saturn in the same house | One area that both expands and restricts; boom and contraction |
| Jupiter and Saturn in opposition | A permanent negotiation between ambition and caution |
| Jupiter and Saturn in trine | Growth that is paced; the most workmanlike of the combinations |
Without a birth time
The sign and degree are settled by the date, since Saturn moves slowly. The retrograde status and every aspect to the other slow bodies are also fine.
What you lose is the house, which is what the placement is actually about, and any contact with the angles. Saturn conjunct the ascendant or Midheaven is one of the most visible placements in a chart, and without a birth time you cannot know whether you have it.
Common questions
How long is Saturn in a sign?
About two and a half years, so the sign belongs to a narrow generation. The house is what makes it personal.
Is Saturn a bad placement?
It describes what has to be earned rather than received. That is demanding rather than unfortunate, and competence built under Saturn tends to stay built.
What is Saturn in fall?
Saturn in Aries, where it restrains the sign that starts things. The usual result is someone whose initiative was checked early and who has to work at self-assertion.
How does this relate to my Saturn return?
Directly. The return brings Saturn back to this degree, and what the return is about is decided by the house natal Saturn occupies.
Was I born with Saturn retrograde?
About a third of people were. The reading usually offered is a sense of duty that is internally generated rather than externally imposed.
Why read Saturn with Jupiter?
They are traditionally a pair: Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts. Both in the same house describes an area of life that alternately opens and closes.
