Free Year of the Rat Guide, Dated from the Real New Year

The Rat opens the cycle of twelve animals. Its years are counted from the Chinese lunisolar new year, which falls somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, so anyone born in that window is routinely given the wrong animal by calculators that split the year at midnight on 1 January.

The year does not begin on 1 January

The Chinese year begins at the second new moon after the December solstice. In the Gregorian calendar that moment lands between 21 January and 20 February, and it moves by several weeks from one year to the next. The 2020 new year fell on 25 January, the 2024 one on 10 February, the 2025 one on 29 January.

Most western sites ignore this and simply divide the animals at 1 January. Everybody born in that six week gap at the head of the year then gets the following animal instead of the one they were actually born under, which works out at roughly one birthday in eight.

The standard illustration is a birth on 1 February 1988. A 1 January table calls that person a Dragon. The 1988 new year did not arrive until 17 February, so by the calendar the tradition uses they are a Rabbit, born in the closing weeks of the previous year. The check on this page computes the actual boundary for your birth year and answers on that basis.

Which years are Rat years

Each animal comes round every twelve years. Recent Rat years are 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2020, and the next is 2032. In each case the year runs from the new year date to the day before the next one, so a Rat year begins in the January or February of the year named and ends in the January or February following.

The animals are only half of the label. A cycle of five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, runs alongside them, each element holding two consecutive years. Because twelve and the ten years of the element cycle only line up every sixty, an animal returns with the same element once a lifetime. 2020 was a Metal Rat year; the Rat before it, in 2008, was an Earth Rat.

What the tradition says about the Rat

The Rat is a yang animal and the first sign of the cycle. In the legend of the Great Race, the Jade Emperor summoned the animals and ranked them by their order of arrival. The Rat could not cross the river, so it rode on the Ox and jumped ahead at the bank, taking first place from an animal that had done the work.

That story sets the tone for the character reading. The Rat is described as quick, observant and resourceful, good at spotting an opening and unsentimental about using it, careful with money to the point of hoarding. The same account calls it restless and inclined to keep its own counsel. None of this is a measurement; it is what the tradition reads into the sign, and a different school will shade it differently.

Trines, opposites and the western comparison

The tradition groups the animals into four trines of three, each set taken to share a way of working. The Rat belongs with the Dragon and the Monkey, a group read as quick and ambitious. Six places along the cycle sits the opposite animal, and for the Rat that is the Horse, the pairing traditionally read as the sharpest clash of temperament.

This is a separate system from western astrology and not a rival version of it. Western signs are set by the position of the Sun on the day of birth; the animal is set by the year. They are answering different questions with different machinery, and there is no reconciling to be done. A Rat can hold any of the twelve western signs, and knowing both tells you nothing more than knowing each on its own.

Questions people ask about this

Is 2020 a Rat year for someone born in early January?

No. The 2020 year began on 25 January, so a birth on 3 January 2020 falls in the previous year, which was a Pig year. The widget above applies the correct boundary rather than the calendar year.

What element was the last Rat year?

Metal. The 2020 Rat year carried Metal, the 2008 one carried Earth, and the pattern repeats so that a Metal Rat year comes round only every sixty years.

When is the next Year of the Rat?

2032. Counting in twelves from 2020 gives the sequence, and the year will open at the lunisolar new year in late January or February rather than on 1 January.

Why is the Rat first when it is the smallest animal?

The legend explains it as a piece of opportunism. The Rat crossed the river on the Ox's back and leapt off at the far bank to arrive first, which is why the cycle opens with it.

Which animals is the Rat said to get on with?

Its trine is the Dragon and the Monkey, and the Ox is often added as a steadying match. The reading is traditional rather than tested, and any account of a real relationship will do better.

Does the Rat year cancel out my western sign?

Neither displaces the other. One is worked out from the year of birth in a lunisolar calendar, the other from the Sun's position on the day, and they are not measuring the same thing.
