Free Snake Year Guide with Accurate Year Boundaries

The Snake holds sixth place in the cycle of twelve. Its most recent year, 2025, began on 29 January, which is a useful reminder that the Chinese year is set by a new moon and not by the first of the month.

The boundary is a new moon, not a date

A Chinese year starts at the second new moon after the December solstice. That places new year's day between 21 January and 20 February, and it shifts by weeks from year to year. The 2025 Snake year began on 29 January. The 2020 year had begun on 25 January, the 2027 one will begin on 6 February.

Western calculators that split the animals at 1 January therefore misfile everyone born in that six week window, about one birthday in eight. The example worth remembering is 1 February 1988: a Gregorian table calls that a Dragon birth, but the 1988 new year fell on 17 February, so the correct animal is Rabbit. The widget above computes the boundary for whatever year you enter, which is the only way to settle a late January or early February birthday.

Only the opening weeks of a Gregorian year are affected. Once past 20 February the two calendars name the same animal, so the question only arises for a narrow band of birthdays.

Snake years and the element cycle

Snake years land every twelve years: 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025, with 2037 next in the sequence. A Snake year runs from its own new year date to the day before the following one.

The five elements, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, run alongside the animals in blocks of two years. Because ten and twelve only agree again at sixty, each animal and element combination returns once every sixty years. 2025 was a Wood Snake year, the first since 1965; 2013 was a Water Snake. In ordinary use the element is spoken as part of the year's name, so leaving it out loses information the tradition treats as significant.

What the tradition attributes to the Snake

The Snake is a yin animal. In the Great Race it had no chance in open water, so by the usual account it wound itself around the Horse's hoof, and when the Horse reached the far bank the Snake unwound and startled it, slipping into sixth place ahead of it.

From that the tradition takes a reading of patience and concealment: private, watchful, unhurried, inclined to work out the whole plan before saying anything, and disliking being rushed or examined. The same account calls the Snake suspicious and slow to forgive. It is worth saying that this is inherited interpretation about a year of birth, so it describes a cohort rather than a person.

Traditional practice also weighs the element of the year before saying anything, so a Wood Snake and a Fire Snake are not given the same account. Any reading quoted without its element is incomplete on the tradition's own terms.

Trines, the opposite and the other zodiac

The tradition sorts the twelve into four trines. The Snake belongs with the Ox and the Rooster, a group read as deliberate, exacting and slow to change course. The opposite animal, six places along, is the Pig, and the tradition reads that pairing as openness meeting reserve.

The animal zodiac is not a version of western astrology. One assigns a sign from the year of birth in a lunisolar calendar, the other from the Sun's position on a particular day. Different inputs, different claims, and no bridge between them. Holding both is fine; treating one as confirmation of the other is not something either system supports.

What would change a compatibility reading is the element pairing and the animals of the other people involved, not the strength of the claim made for it.

Questions people ask about this

When did the 2025 Snake year begin?

On 29 January 2025. Births in January before that date belong to the Dragon year that started in 2024, which is exactly the case a 1 January cut-off gets wrong.

What element was the 2025 Snake year?

Wood. The element cycle runs Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water in pairs of years, and the previous Snake year in 2013 was a Water Snake.

Which years are Snake years?

1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025 among recent ones, with 2037 next. Each opens at the lunisolar new year, so the start date differs by weeks between them.

How did the Snake reach sixth place?

By the usual telling it hid in the Horse's hoof to cross the river, then unwound and startled the Horse at the bank, taking the place ahead of it.

Which animals suit the Snake in tradition?

Its trine is the Ox and the Rooster, and those matches are described as steady rather than exciting. The verdict shifts once the elements of the two years are taken into account.

Does a Snake year relate to the western sign Scorpio?

No, despite both being described in similar language. One comes from the year and one from the day, and the resemblance is in the vocabulary rather than in the systems.
